"Dominique Portet was bred in the purple. He spent his early years at Château Lafite (where his father was régisseur) and was one of the very first flying winemakers, commuting to Clos du Val in the Napa Valley where his brother is winemaker and helping with the initial vintages. Since 1976 he has lived in Australia, spending more than 20 years as managing director of Taltarni, and also developed the Clover Hill Vineyard in Tasmania. After retiring from Taltarni, he spent 6 months in Provence, with his family, making wine and setting up an international distribution network, but always intended to return to Australia and to set himself up in the Yarra Valley, a region he has been closely observing sine the mid-1980s. In 2001 he found the perfect site he had long looked for, and in a twinkling of an eye, built his winery and cellar door, and planted a quixotic mix of viognier (0,9 ha) and merlot (0,7 ha) next to the winery."
